Umbertide, the ancient crossroad of many cultures along the Tiber river.
Located in the upper Tiber valley, crossed by the Tiber river and the Reggia stream, Umbertide has a characteristic old downtown surrounded by medieval walls in the stretches along the waterways.
Even if very ancient, the origin of the city of Umbertide is still uncertain.
Some researchers consider it as founded by the Etruscans (the first settlements appear to date back to around VIth century B.C, as evidenced by the "bronzetti di Monte Acuto”, votive statuettes found in the sanctuary on the peak of the mountain), others by the ancient Umbrian people.
One of the most important monuments of the town is the “Rocca”, a superb medieval fortress that has always been the symbol of Umbertide, now used as a Centre for Contemporary Art Exhibitions.
Of fifteenth-century origins, the Fortress is made up of a 31-meter-high tower facing the Reggia stream and connected inward by two lower circular fortified towers and a third square bastion.
The presence of Renaissance and Mannerist artists such as Luca Signorelli and Nicolò Circignani, known as Pomarancio, make this ancient hamlet a city of art that is worth a careful visit.
It is here that these artists have left important works such as the “Pala del Signorelli” or have painted, as in the case of Pinturicchio, masterpieces such as the “Incoronazione della Vergine” (up to 1814 in the church of “Santa Maria della Pietà) which, even if today is in the private studio of the Pope, it is still part of the art history of the community of Umbertide.
The “Collegiata” of “Santa Maria della Reggia” has a very original shape: octagonal outside and circular inside, with a diameter of 22 meters for a height of 40 meters. From the XVIIth century polychrome terracotta floor rise 16 very high columns; canvases and frescoes by great artists decorate the walls.
Built between the middle and the end of the sixteenth century, the church preserves a “Madonna col Bambino e Santi” of the XVth century, a “Trasfigurazione” by Nicolò Circignani, and is adorned with a magnificent tabernacle of the sixteenth century. It is currently home of the Parish of “San Giovanni Battista”.
Throughout the year, in the chief town and in the hamlets, there is a succession of great and small events for the pleasure of the citizens and the many visitors who attend it.
The most important are undoubtedly, in the centre of Umbertide: the historic re-enactment in costume "Fratta dell'Ottocento", the September Fairs, the exhibition of the music bands "Città di Umbertide" and the trade fair of photographic material "Photography in Umbria ".
Starting from Umbertide, after having visited the interesting old downtown, you can go on to discover a territory characterized by an intact natural environment which hides valuable historic-architectural beauties. Castles, abbeys, medieval villages immersed in a nature that has kept intact the scents of the old times.
